Now accepting submissions for the Spring 2020 issue!
The journal is registered with the Library of Congress, has it's own ISSN, and is a great way for students to complete their experience with the scientific process. So often in secondary education, the focus of study lies on experimental design and careful analysis of results, but little attention is given to sharing of data among peers. This sharing, which is such an integral part of science for those in the research field, is the focus of this journal. By producing a publishable journal article about their experiment, students are forced to think about the process of science and thus gain a deeper understanding of it.
Who can submit?
The journal accepts submissions from students in grades 7-12. Students may submit articles about experiments that they have done in class, or articles about projects conducted in a more long-term or independent-study manner. The paper need not be about any novel research, but it should reflect a deep understanding of the scientific process by the author. See the submission guidelines page for more details.
Who reviews the submissions?
All submissions are reviewed by students in the New Visions Engineering Program, which is run by the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga BOCES. As with any other peer-reviewed journal, the editing students will select those papers that they want to include in the current publication, provide feedback in the form of editor's notes to the author, and work with the author to improve the paper before publication. This will provide an authentic experience for both the authors and the editors. Science teachers, as well as area science professionals will be available for consultation.
When and how do I submit?
Sumitting an article is easy! All you need to do is e-mail your article (in a common document format, e.g. word) to submissions@fljss.com. You will receive a conformation e-mail when your submission has been successfully received. The journal is published twice each year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Deadlines are posted on the submission guidelines page.
